Lobi Stars of Benue have set a new record in the Nigeria Professional Football League by going 50 games unbeaten.
This feat was achieved when ironically they ended Enugu Rangers’ six-match unbeaten streak winning 3-1 at the Aper Aku Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Eduwo and Anthony Okpotu, who leads the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) scorers’ chart, proved to be a handful for the Rangers defence.
Rangers’ back four of Okey Odita, Ousmane Pape Sane, Bright Esieme and Chidiebere Okolie often came unstuck against the duo.
On seven minutes, the 19-year-old striker finished off a well-worked move from Okpotu with deadly precision after shaking off his marker.
Okpotu caused the Rangers defence more troubles just before the break when he attempted to dribble through a forest of legs, before the ball fell kindly for Eduwo to smash away for his second goal of the afternoon.
Lobi Stars were already looking in command of the match and a two-goal lead at the break was well-deserved.
Despite the introduction of Bitrus Dada, Chinedu Udeagha and Ifeanyi Egwim by Rangers head coach Imama Amapakabo, the hosts looked like they would score next from their counter-attacking move.
However, the Flying Antelopes pushed for a goal and got one with seven minutes to time. Chisom Egbuchulam scored off a very swift move from defence to attack as the game looked to be heading for a nervy finish for the hosts.
It was Lobi’s attacking duo of Eduwo and Okpotu who stepped up to put the game to bed. Okpotu once again turning provider for Eduwo’s hat-trick.
Eduwo, who has now scored four league goals this season, is excited with his feat of scoring his first career hat-trick in the Nigerian top-flight.
“I am so happy that I scored three goals today,” he told supersport.com. “It is my first (hat-trick) in the league, and I hope to score more goals to help my team win matches.”
Despite the loss, Rangers still remain top of the pile with 14 points while Lobi move into third sport with a point less than the leaders.
